Sukyung Chun is a highly accomplished double bassist, known for her broad experience and musical artistry. With a career that includes positions in several prestigious orchestras, she currently serves as the Principal Double Bass with the New West Symphony, Assistant Principal Double Bass with the Fresno Philharmonic, and section bassist with the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. In addition to these roles, she has had the privilege of performing with other well-respected ensembles in the United States, including LA Opera, San Diego Symphony, and Sacramento Philharmonic. She has also had the opportunity to perform with the Modesto Symphony, Monterey Symphony, and San Bernardino Symphony.
Ms. Chun’s dedication to the arts has led to meaningful collaborations with renowned conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Christoph Eschenbach, James Colon, Sir Neville Marriner, and Vladimir Jurowski. Under their guidance, Sukyung has been able to showcase her technical abilities and interpretative insights, and she is grateful for the experiences that have shaped her musical growth.
Alongside her performance career, Sukyung has contributed to music education. She previously served as an Adjunct Professor at California State University, Stanislaus, where she shared her knowledge and passion for the double bass with aspiring musicians. Her approach to teaching focuses not only on technical mastery but also on the importance of musicality and expression, encouraging students to find their own artistic voices.
Sukyung holds a Master of Music and a Graduate Certificate from the USC Thornton School of Music, a Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn Conservatory of Music, and a Bachelor of Music from Seoul National University. Her academic training, along with her professional experiences, has deepened her understanding of music, which she continues to apply in her performances and teaching.
Throughout her career, Sukyung has been honored with recognition in several competitions, including The Music Association of Korea Competition, the Seoul Baroque Chamber Orchestra Solo Competition, and the LAKMA Competition.
Sukyung’s artistry is characterized by a thoughtful balance of technical skill and emotional expression, and she strives to connect meaningfully with both her audiences and students. Whether performing with esteemed orchestras or guiding the next generation of musicians, she remains dedicated to her craft and to contributing to the classical music community.
