Teo Zhen Yi (Zack) is a pianist and pedagogue whose playing is distinguished by its vocal quality, poetic sensibility, and refined touch at the keyboard. Originally aspiring to be a voice major, this early affinity for singing has profoundly shaped Zhen Yi’s pianism, resulting in performances that are deeply human, characterful, and expressive, with phrasing that breathes and sings.
Zhen Yi holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from LASALLE College of the Arts, where he studied under the tutelage of Benjamin Loh. His musical development has been further enriched through masterclasses with distinguished artists and pedagogues, including Prof. Jacques Rouvier, Prof. Lucas Blondeel, Prof. Björn Lehmann, Prof. Peter Takács, Prof. Xiting Yang, Prof. Ko Iwasaki, Dr. Svetlana Transky, Dr. Yejin Noh, Ms. Ornela Ervin, and Mr. Richard Ormrod.
As a performer, Zhen Yi has appeared in recital across the United States, Europe, and Asia, with performances at notable venues such as Prugio Art Hall in Seoul, the Universität der Künste Konzertsaal in Berlin, and the Steinway Gallery at ION Orchard in Singapore. In addition to solo performance, he has also participated in chamber music settings, collaborating with fellow musicians, experiences that have further informed his listening, flexibility, and sense of musical dialogue. His repertoire spans solo piano works from all stylistic periods, approached with sensitivity to sound, structure, and musical narrative.
Alongside his performing life, Zhen Yi is a dedicated piano educator, teaching students from beginner to advanced levels. His teaching philosophy centres on a holistic understanding of piano playing – encompassing musical intention, physical movement, technical clarity, the learning process, and performance psychology. With a highly pedagogical approach, he guides students in precise physical awareness at the instrument while respecting individual emotional perspectives and modes of understanding. Lessons often evolve into reflective, almost therapeutic spaces that deepen students’ musical insight and self-awareness.
