Yu-Chi Tai is a Steinway Ensemble Artist and former Professor of Piano at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
Dr. Tai has performed in prominent venues including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, Villa Bertramka in Prague, Concert Hall in Zwickau Germany, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Foellinger Great Hall at the Krannert Center in Illinois, Steinway Hall in Akron Ohio and Los Altos California, Auer Hall at Indiana University, National Concert Hall in Taiwan, and Rolston Recital Hall at the Banff Centre in Canada, among others. She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra, UTPA Wind Ensemble, UTPA Chamber Orchestra, Killington Chamber Orchestra, and the South Texas Valley Symphony Orchestra. Her performances have been broadcast on WFMT in Illinois and KBMH in Texas.
A dedicated chamber musician, Dr. Tai is a member of the Ehlen–Tai Piano Duo, which was invited by the Steinway Concert & Artist Division in New York to become a Steinway Artist Ensemble in 2012. The duo has performed concert tours across the United States, and their debut album, Virtuosic Dance (Azica Records), was released in 2016. Dr. Tai has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists and participated in festivals including the DoCha Chamber Music Festival, C’est Bon Chamber Festival, Killington Music Festival, and the Montecito International Music Festival.
An active educator, has presented masterclasses in the United States and Taiwan and frequently serves as an adjudicator for regional, national, and international competitions. Her students accomplishments include being prizewinners of New York Debut Young Musicians Competition, Elite International Music Competition, United States International Music competition, Music Legacy Open Competition, MTAC Piano Solo and Concerto Competition, US Open Music Competition, US New Star Piano Competition, CAPMT Contemporary Competition, CAPMT Concerto Competition, San Francisco International Innovative Competition, Steinway Piano Competition, and so on.
Dr. Tai earned the Doctor of Musical Arts and Artist Diploma in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, where she studied with Ian Hobson and served as his teaching assistant. Her prior piano training was with Arnaldo Cohen, Evelyne Brancart and Luba Edlina-Dubinsky at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she received the Master of Music degree and Performance Diploma with honors. Currently, she is faculty at San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College and the Young Artist Performance Chair of MTNA National Competition.
